Today I’m getting into the holiday spirit by creating DIY holiday trees. My entire house is filled with a palette of aqua and baby blue, so sometimes it can be hard to find holiday decor to match my house, so I decided to make some of my own!
First, I found some beautiful velvet ribbon in colors that I like, this ribbon is available at most any craft store like JoAnns or Hobby Lobby. I chose baby blue, kelly green and red to cover my three cardboard trees. Each spool of ribbon has about 6 feet, so I bought two spools of each color just to be sure I had enough. The small tree stands at 8 inches tall and took about 9 feet of ribbon so I’m guessing the large 10 inch tree will take about 12 feet of ribbon. I bought my ribbon at Hobby Lobby for $2.00 a spool and each cardboard tree cost $1.50. So each tree will only run you about $5.50!
The process is pretty simple, I started out by gluing the ribbon to the tip of the tree. I then proceeded to wrap the ribbon around the tree form, gluing as I went. You can use any craft glue like Mod Podge but I ended up using my hot glue gun because it was a little bit faster. I wrapped 3/4 the way around the tree and glued. I then cut the ribbon off at an angle so that I could allow the seams to meet. Next, I tucked the angular cut side of the ribbon under the ribbon that had previously been glued onto the tree. Wrap again and cut. The entire process will be repeated about a dozen times to cover the entire tree. You can see how tucking the ribbon under itself creates a whimsical zig zag pattern along the back of the tree.
I’ve only got one tree complete at this time but can’t wait to finish the others. Stay tuned for the final results!
